DON GOODRUM

This is the community page and will be used to help those who knew Don Goodrum to stay in touch and remember him. This will, hopefully, also develop into a family tree of art, showing how Don has inspired those who knew him or those who know and love his art.

To start the ball rolling, Here are a five paintings done by Chris Goodrum, Don Goodrum's widow.  Formally educated in the fine arts, Chris met Don at an art store she was working at in Florida when he came in to buy supplies, after some courtship, they were married in 1958.  If you talk to her long enough, she will humbly admit that she was instrumental in

assisting Don discover his individual technique and “See the light”

as she would say, bringing his paintings from a previously dark

style into a more thoughtful and contented  aesthetic.

Donalee Goodrum-White, Don's eldest daughter, wrote this wonderful essay remembering her childhood. Click here to view the full essay.

A few excerpts:

"His hands would never handle anything mightier than a paintbrush. However, with a stroke of his mighty paintbrush, he painted my childhood beautiful."

"I remember the thundering classical music that filled our home while my dad worked. I remember the candlelight, incense-filled evenings of lively conversations with other artists, dancers, playwrights and poets who sat around on big cushions and wicker furniture discussing the controversial issues of the 1960s. Best of all, I remember the pride I felt every time someone asked me, “What does your father do for a living?” Standing a little taller, I declared, “My father is an artist.”

"My father’s sense of purpose and quest-filled life imprinted upon his children a special courage. The courage to live a life outside of the mainstream of society. The courage to seize a quest, and hold to through any storm. The courage to carve a self-made niche from the raw granite of life in a way never done before."
